hbc Lunch Series
The premise of the lunch series initiative is to invite Harvard Graduate School alumni and experienced leaders in diverse sectors of the biotech industry back to campus to discuss their career experiences with current trainees in an intimate setting.
It consists of a 1.5 hour lunch with 8-10 graduate students and postdocs discussing everything from early career decisions to learned skills and management styles.
Dr. Jared Silverman, PhD

Jared Silverman is Head of Translational Discovery at the Gates Medical Research Institute. He previously served as Senior Vice President at Kaleido Biosciences, developing a drug discovery research platform for the microbiome. Prior to Kaleido he spent 18 years at Cubist Pharmaceuticals, the last five as Vice President, Biology.
Jared holds an A. B. in Molecular Biology from Princeton, received a Ph. D. in Microbiology from Harvard Medical School and completed postdoctoral training at Yale University.
Dr. Alfred Sandrock, Jr., M.D., Ph.D.

Alfred W. Sandrock Jr. is the Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Biogen, Inc. Since joining Biogen in 1998, Dr. Sandrock has held several senior executive positions including Group Senior Vice President of Development Sciences, Senior Vice President of Neurology Research and Development, and Vice President of Clinical Development, Neurology. Prior to joining Biogen, Dr. Sandrock was Assistant Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and an Assistant in Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Sandrock received a B.A. in Human Biology from Stanford University, an M.D. from Harvard Medical School, and a Ph.D. in Neurobiology from Harvard University.
Dr. Vishal Patel, Ph.D.

Dr. Vishal Patel is currently Chief of Staff of Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research. Previously, Dr. Patel was Senior Director for Global Institutional Affairs at EMD Serono. During the Obama Administration, Dr. Patel served as adviser to the Under Secretary for Economics, Energy, and the Environment at the U.S. Department of State. He also served as a health policy adviser to U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman during debate and passage of the Affordable Care Act.
Vishal earned a B.S. in bioengineering from the University of Illinois; a M.B.A. from the MIT Sloan School of Management; and a Ph.D. in biological chemistry and molecular pharmacology from Harvard University.
Dr. Mounir Koussa, Ph.D.

Mounir Koussa is Founder and CEO of Confer Health. Confer’s mission is to democratize health testing by bringing clinical grade diagnostics into the home. Confer is Mounir’s first company, and was launched on technology he developed during his PhD in Neurobiology at Harvard.
Since then, the team at Confer grew to 40 employees, Confer developed its own proprietary technology, working to commercialize this technology in a direct to consumer form factor to enable everyone to take proactive control of their health. It is bound to be a great discussion about startups and entrepreneurship!
